Array X: Alex Leong 10th Solo Exhibition

Array X: Alex Leong 10th Solo Exhibition

The Art Gallery Penang returns to the exhibition calendar with Array X, the 10th solo exhibition by Malaysian artist Alex Leong.

This exhibition marks a significant milestone not only for Alex, but also for The Art Gallery. 2026 marks 10 years since Ee Lene took over the management of The Art Gallery in 2016, making Array X a particularly meaningful exhibition for both artist and gallery.

Presented under the theme “Ten series. Ten perspectives. One journey through memory, heritage and harmony,” Array X brings together ten distinct bodies of work that reflect Alex’s longstanding fascination with childhood, community, heritage and everyday Malaysian life.

Known for his highly detailed and captivating watercolour compositions, Alex Leong is regarded for his nostalgic portrayal of Malaysia, particularly the 1980s and 1990s — a period before smartphones, social media and digital technology became part of everyday life. His panoramic scenes revisit childhood games, school days, hawkers, traditional trades, old shopfronts and signboards, street life and festive celebrations.

At the heart of Array X is Alex’s desire to preserve memories of a Malaysia that is gradually changing. His paintings can be viewed as a visual conversation between a father and his daughter, allowing him to share with the younger generation the places, people, traditions and experiences that shaped his own childhood.
